古に学び,今を創る書。

Inspired by tradition, created for today.

Ito Yamada creates authentic Japanese calligraphy—brushed in sumi on washi—and delivers one-of-a-kind artworks and tattoo-ready designs.

About

I am Ito Yamada, a calligrapher based in Gifu, Japan. I began practicing calligraphy in childhood and have studied under Master Seishin Oike since six years ago.

My works have been exhibited and awarded at Japan’s central calligraphy exhibitions, establishing my foundation in authentic tradition.

Mission

My mission is to protect classical Japanese calligraphy and bring its profound spirit into today’s world.

Around the world, people wear kanji tattoos that are incorrect in meaning or poorly written, and imitations that lack true tradition spread easily. By working with sumi, washi, and kyūjitai, I create calligraphy that carries cultural dignity—so what is worn or displayed is both beautiful and authentic.

Philosophy

Calligraphy is not just writing—it is the act of giving form to meaning.

I work with kyūjitai—the old-style kanji once used daily in Japan until World War II. After Japan’s defeat, script reforms simplified many characters, and most kyūjitai disappeared from daily use.

By deliberately preserving these classical forms, and by using authentic materials—sumi ink and handmade washi paper—I resist the loss of cultural depth and carry the dignity of true calligraphy into the present.

For me, every stroke is both heritage and expression, rooted in tradition yet alive in today’s world.

Services

Traditional Works

I create traditional calligraphy pieces—hanging scrolls, framed works, and calligraphy on natural wood or logs. Each work is unique, crafted with classical brush technique and designed to bring timeless elegance into modern spaces.

Tattoo Designs

Every tattoo design begins with brush and sumi ink on authentic handmade washi, using kyūjitai (old-form kanji). Each piece is carefully digitized and delivered with a note explaining its meaning and cultural context.
